What is MAR?
MAR – the European Market Abuse Regime – has been in force since July 2016. Now market participants are having to introduce systems to monitor their trading. Many companies trading wholesale energy are currently working on a MAR system, so that they can demonstrate compliance, particularly  as part of their annual audits. This is not a simple thing to do, as it requires a constant flow of high quality data - orders and transactions from all markets, whether traded on exchange, via broker, or bilateral.

In addition, the obligations under MAR lack a lot of clarity, and the regulators are unlikely to provide much detail in the remaining time. As with REMIT before, EFETnet will provide a compliance solution that brings together a critical mass of companies who will implement their obligations in a consistent way. In the absence of clear guidance, such de-facto standards are the next best thing – the market can’t all be wrong at the same time.

EFETnet is launching a standard MAR solution for the EU energy trading market. Through the central collection of data for EMIR and REMIT, EFETnet have already done the heavy lifting of data collection and cleaning. This data can be reused for MAR compliance – centrally, and without the need for a costly IT project at the market participant’s site. The EFETnet MAR solution ensures that all market participants can comply with regulation at minimum cost. More than 50 large companies have already participated in EFETnet’s MAR data pilot with more joining regularly, making the EFETnet solution the de-facto MAR standard in European energy trading.
